There are just so many posts and stories out there that touch on the raw milk question in one way or another that we just can’t keep highlighting each one as we have been doing. So we’re going to try a new format here, providing a brief description or excerpt and a link for each story of possible interest, from a raw milk point of view. These stories are “new” in that they’ve not been previously featured on “the Bovine”.

Raw Milk a Specialty of Berks Farm Dairy: “…..Unlike the processed milk commonly for sale in chain grocery stores, raw milk from grass-fed cows, as its name indicates, is neither pasteurized nor homogenized. Although research on the health benefits of raw milk is limited, evidence is available that suggests its higher concentrations of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are anti-carcinogenic, Lopez said.

“It’s kind of a wonder nutrient,” Lopez said. “It’s intriguing how this set of fatty acids is beneficial to the diet.”

After working as a veterinarian for several years in Texas, Lopez moved back to Pennsylvania last fall to be close to his family in Berks County and decided to open a raw milk dairy on the family farm, which hadn’t been used in 10 years. Lopez’s Ayrshire cows arrived in April and the course of milking began.

While living in Texas, Lopez used to drink store-bought milk, but once he tried a glass of raw milk in Pennsylvania “It was a flavor explosion in my mouth,” Lopez said. “This is what milk is supposed to taste like.”

Lopez said he grew up on the farm drinking raw milk. He explained that CLAs are known to have reduced the size of cancerous tumors.”

The Cheesemonger holds forth on French Brie. A sample: “…It is produced in the Seine-et-Marne region of France and traditionally is made with unpasteurized milk. Because of US laws prohibiting the importing of young cheeses made from raw milk, the French Brie humankinds know and eat tends to be milder than that enjoyed in France and other parts of the world where import laws on raw milk products are more lax or do not exist….”
