Michael Schmidt narrates Haydn opera in a free lunchtime concert in Toronto, Thursday, June 4th, 2009, at 12 noon

Once again, raw milk farmer Michael Schmidt will exercise his artistic talents, this time as a narrator, in collaboration with Kevin Mallon’s Aradia Ensemble in a free lunchtime concert at Toronto’s new Opera House [aka The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts] at 145 Queen Street West [near University Ave.] in downtown Toronto. The concert takes place from 12 noon to 1 pm in the Centre’s Richard Bradshaw Auditorium.

Lo Speziale/Der Apotheker: Mahler Reconstructs Haydn
Under the direction of Kevin Mallon, the Aradia Ensemble presents the North American premiere of Haydn’s charming comic opera Lo Speziale in a German version reconstructed by Gustav Mahler as Der Apotheker and last performed at the Vienna State Opera under Mahler’s direction over 100 years ago. Download a PDF of the program.

Lo Speziale is a comic opera by Josef Haydn (1732 -1809. It will be presented in a version by German musicologist Robert Hirschfeld (1858 – 1914) as Der Apotheker (1895), originally conducted by Gustaf Mahler. It is presented here by kind permission of the Vienna State Opera. Continue reading
