TORONTO: It’s been six months this week since crusading raw milk farmer Michael Schmidt was found in contempt of Ontario court and ordered to pay $55,000 in fines and costs. At a preliminary hearing last summer,York Region’s lawyer offered to drop the contempt-of-court charges, if Michael would move his Blue Bus operation south of Steeles Ave., out of York Region.
Mr. Schmidt did not go for the deal, but presented York Region’s offer in court as evidence that the health authorities are not truly concerned about people’s health or don’t really believe that raw milk is a danger. Mr. Schmidt’s view was that if the authorities were truly concerned about protecting people from the health hazards of raw milk, they’d be making every effort to shut him down, rather than just shifting him to a neighbouring jurisdiction.
Mr. Schmidt has also drawn attention to the fact that although health authorities have a copy of his cowshare members list, none of the cowshare members have been contacted to warn them of the dangers they supposedly face by continuing to consume raw milk.
