“(05-22) 04:00 PDT Washington — Pennsylvania Amish farmer Dan Allgyer has become a cause celebre for raw milk drinkers as the target of a Food and Drug Administration campaign – using sting operations and guns-drawn raids usually reserved for terrorists and drug lords – to eliminate unpasteurized milk.
Such milk, also known as raw or fresh milk, is legal in California and considered essential to Europe’s finest cheeses, creams and butters.
But under the authority of a 1987 FDA regulation banning interstate commerce in raw milk, government agents have conducted a sting operation on a raw milk producer in Fresno, made three raids on a boutique goat cheese maker in Ventura County and descended with guns drawn on a raw milk buying club in Venice (Los Angeles County). This month we let you know that legislators in three states — influenced by Big Agriculture — were trying to criminalize taking photos or videos of farm facilities.
Nearly 33,000 people signed our petition to stand up for transparency and the right to take pictures of farms. Over 400 people — many of them farmers — took it one step further and uploaded pictures of farms to our Facebook wall. Continue reading

“…Next case in point: raw milk. When I was a child, I lost six months out of a school year home sick with brucellosis. My country doctor called it Malta Fever. Either way, it came from drinking our neighbor’s unpasteurized milk, given to us as a “sweet treat” before he sent it on for processing.
Libertarians would pull my credentials if they heard I want raw (unpasteurized) milk banned as some states have done. To me, it’s a public health issue, not a protected personal choice.
Drinking raw milk can cause outbreaks of E. coli (O157:H7), salmonella, and listeria infections in children which can result in permanent kidney damage or death. And we all know how hard it is to get a kidney these days. Continue reading

“DELAWARE TWP. — Louis Pasteur developed the modern process of heating food to slow microbial growth with thoughts of keeping beer and wine from spoiling. More than a quarter-century later, in the late 1800s, a German agricultural chemist suggested pasteurizing milk, which also extends its shelf-life.
But “milk” is what most people think of when they hear “pasteurization” and in most states, including New Jersey, it’s illegal to sell “raw milk.” But a movement is under way to change that; a bill has cleared the state Assembly and is before the Senate that would allow the sale.
People who want to learn more are invited to a meeting on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the township Municipal Building in Sergeantsville. Rutgers University professor Joseph Heckman will speak and the documentary “Milk War” will be shown. Questions and comments will be taken. Continue reading
