From Manda Aufochs Gillespie, in the Vancouver Observer:
“Hey Canadians, you have no right to drink milk says the Ontario Court of Justice. Specifically, the judge overturned an earlier court’s decision to allow informed consent for cowshare members to drink raw milk in Ontario, saying” “The entitlement to consume milk, raw or otherwise, is not a Charter protected right.”
This declaration by a Canadian court came just on the tail of a similar declaration in a Wisconsin court which ruled that people in that U.S. state “do not have a fundamental right to produce and consume the foods of their choice….”
These attacks on food freedom are the most recent saga in the ongoing legal battle about the constitutionality of raw milk. In the U.S., that battle is fought state by state, with the majority of states allowing it in some form or other—either for sale on the grocery store shelf (like across the border in Washington state) or for sale only through a co-op structure where a person becomes a partial owner of a cow. In Canada the battle is moving from the provinces to the national stage. “Canada is the only G8 country to ban the sale of [raw milk] products, which some argue has greater health benefits than the available pasteurized milk,” according to the National Post.
All food rights banned?
This current episode is particularly disturbing, especially to North America’s growing foodies; both judges claim that there is no constitutional or Charter right to consume milk (raw or otherwise) or, it seems, any other food.
“The implications are far-reaching,” according to a Vancouver Sun article by Karen Selick, the lawyer defending Michael Schmidt in the Ontario raw milk case, “If the judge is right about this, future courts could similarly declare that you have no right to eat meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, vegetables, or grains, even if government-approved — in short, you may have no right to eat anything at all.”….”
How dare they decide what I can and cannot feed my family! How dare they conduct themselves in such a tyrannical way! My government has told me that I don’t have consititutional right to drink milk! That I don’t have the right to eat well and have access to properly raised and maintained meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables and grains. How dare they legislate despicable regulations for the production of the foods supplied to us, and than turn around and restrict proper, nutritious foods. How dare they allow genetically modified foods and legislate that I don’t have a right to know that that’s what I’m eating. I know damn well that their legal, regulated foods are despicable and I refuse to watch my son eat them! It’s all so ludicrous that I can’t think about it without getting so angry! To all those in the government of Canada that that are partaking in this; “we all stand alone in the end, and give an account to Someone far superior than you and to all those in your camp” You think yourselves superior than the people, but your wrong – right is always superior, right always wins, even as we suffer, for suffering is the evidence that the oppressor has already lost. For to inflict suffering exposes them for what they really are – wrong, thereby making the sufferer right. And we all know which side God stands on.
“And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickednes; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off”
Psalm 94: 23
“I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears”
Psalm 34:4
For those uncomfortable with scripture, it is who I am, all that I am. For I know God made me, and it was He who gave us our food. And in His great wisdom why would he create the cow knowing it would take thousands of years until Louis Pasteur would make milk safe to drink. If we think like fools and believe everything were told, than who do we blame? The fool that told it, or the fool that believed it?
You got my vote Mary Jo! Now if just a few million of us in North America would wake up and “smell the coffee” in the same way, we just might have a chance to take back our lost liberties. That’s right, most of us just aren’t aware that we have, indeed, lost the right to choice…regarding procurement of healthy food. God save us! (the queen has always drunk raw milk!) And my USA government is ensconced in corporatism. Our leaders are not much more than titled “bauble-heads.” It’s not really about food safety folks…it’s about the control of money…just follow it!
Some great comments and some great stories/articles/opinion pieces here at the Bovine, lately.
It is heartening to see ‘the people’ (with their common sense wisdom and knowledge) fighting back.
It is sad still, to know how much we’ve lost.
