Canada’s dairy board “Healthwashing”

We’ve been talking a lot about healthwashing on the Love in the Kitchen blog lately. When it comes to some of the moo-vers and shakers of healthwashing, the dairy industry is right at the top. When perusing the Dietitians of Canada “myth debunker” last week, I was a bit stunned to see myth #16 which reads: “MYTH: Cows’ Milk is full of hormones and antibiotics.”  The next one down read: “MYTH: Pasteurization Destroys vitamins and minerals in milk.”

I was curious to see who were listed as sponsors for this “myth” debunking guide so I flipped back to the front page.  Lo and behold, the Dairy Farmers of Canada were a main sponsor. (And, another sponsor was Hellman’s mayo- see myth #36: Mayonnaise should be avoided when following a healthy diet.” Don’t even get me started there). Continue reading

UK considers revising raw milk rules

From Food Safety News:

“…England and Wales have about 100 registered cow operations selling raw milk for human consumption, as well as 27 registered producers of raw milk from goats, and three from sheep.

Not since 2002 have any of those raw milk producers had a product associated with an outbreak of illness. In the 10 years prior to 2002, there were 20 outbreaks — mostly of E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium  DT12 — which sickened 242 people and sent 36 to hospitals. There were no deaths.
Except for Scotland — where all raw milk sales are banned, the UK limits sales to the farm where raw milk is produced.    Continue reading

“A couple of years ago, an enterprising New York chef made headlines by serving cheese made from his wife’s breast milk. His stunt provoked a swift reaction from the New York Health Department, which didn’t seem to find this novelty menu item amusing. Despite his venture’s unsuccessful end, a London ice cream parlor tried to imitate him last year by selling a breast-milk-based product.

Do you find the idea of human cheese and ice cream bizarre? Disturbing? If so, it’s not very difficult to see why. What’s more difficult to explain is how we came to drink milk from other mammals in the first place. Continue reading
