“On December 7, 2012 Russia’s Federal Agency for Agricultural Control, Rosselhohznadzor, banned the imports of meat containing ractopamine. This is a food additive that allows to reduce the content of fat in beef and pork. The drug is added to food so that animals grow the muscle mass instead of fat.
According to researchers, ractopamine affects the human cardiovascular system, and in some cases can cause food poisoning. This drug is banned for use in 160 countries, including China and Russia. It is allowed in 24 countries, including Canada and the United States. Codex Alimentarius of the World Health Organization, adopted in July 2012 in Rome by representatives of 186 countries, allows the contents of ractopamine in meat. Continue reading

New York judge Theodor Katz is forcing the United States Food and Drug Administration to take another look at petitions from those who want a ban on antibiotics in livestock and poultry farming.
The judge is tangling with a powerful Washington bureaucracy, not to mention the makers and marketers of antibiotics and livestock and poultry farmers.
But Katz may just win in a controversy that’s at least 45 years old, dating back to before the Swann report in the United Kingdom said it’s foolish to keep adding antibiotics to livestock and poultry feeds because it gives free range for antibiotic-resistant bacteria to multiply and then become a threat to human health. If you are looking for a source of raw cow’s milk to drink, you should be aware that not all cow’s milk is created equal. If you fail to investigate the methods employed in producing the raw milk you plan to drink, not only might you not get any nutritional benefits that you hoped for but you might be consuming raw milk that puts your health at risk.
As part of his study performed from 1932 to 1942, Francis Pottenger, Jr., MD compared the effects of feeding cats a diet of two thirds raw milk with one third raw meat to a diet of two thirds pasteurized milk with one third raw meat. While cats on the raw milk with raw meat remained healthy generation after generation, those on pasteurized milk with raw meat did not. The raw milk in this portion of the study came from cows fed fresh feed. Continue reading
