March Obstruction Trial Postponed due to farmer Michael Schmidt’s Illness

Word from the farm is that Michael has fallen sick, and so has gotten sick leave from court for two days. The trial is postponed until Thursday, March 9 and will go until March 10.
Michael is uncertain how far we will get, if at all, as fitting a five-day trial into two days seems a bit far-fetched.

For those of you who did not know, this trial is for the obstruction charges relating to the October 2015 raid on the farm.

Supporters are encouraged to attend the trial which will be in Walkerton, now on March 9th and 10th.

Dairy Linked to 3 Deaths, Miscarriage, and that’s from PASTEURIZED dairy!

Illustrating once again that pasteurization is not the panacea it’s sometimes cracked up to be — From AP via Cheeseslave blog:

“BOSTON (AP) — At Whittier Farms dairy, the fifth-generation owners brag of the quality of their Holstein cows and still deliver milk right to your door, in glass bottles. Customers like the products because they are a hormone-free taste of old New England.

But health officials now say three elderly men have died and at least one pregnant woman has miscarried since last June after drinking bacteria-contaminated milk from the dairy’s plant in Shrewsbury, about 35 miles west of Boston. Continue reading

More than one million glasses of raw milk; appeal verdict announcement and news conference Tues. Sept. 27, 4 pm

I can haz raw milk verdict, finally!

Tomorrow, Tuesday Sept. 27th, at 4 pm, Michael Schmidt’s lawyer, Karen Selick, has been promised that she will receive by fax, Justice Tetley’s decision on the Province of Ontario’s appeal of Michael’s January 2010 acquittal.

To help spread the word, whichever way the verdict goes, Michael Schmidt will be holding a news conference, also at 4 pm Tuesday, at the blue bus, in the parking lot of the Christian Community church at 901 Rutherford Road, in Vaughan, where farm share members have been coming for years now to collect their milk on Tuesday afternoons. Cowshare members are invited to be there for the occasion and to share their stories with any media folk who might be taking time off from the election to cover this story. Continue reading

Looking deeper into the CDC data on raw milk cheese safety vs pasteurized

“If you’ll remember, the data I had from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control covered 33 years 1973-2005. For subsequent years, I turned to the CDC’s online database, which goes up through 2008, or another three years. (Another, more accessible resource laying out a table of illnesses that includes cheese, and goes through 2007, is available here.)

If one of the FDA’s apologists had taken up my offer, they would have been able to play a little bit of “gotcha,” because there were more illnesses from raw milk cheese during those three years than in the entire 33 years before. Interestingly, there were also a comparable number of illnesses from pasteurized cheese.  Continue reading

Raw milk standards hard to establish?

David E. Gumpert talks about raw milk standards in his latest post on The Complete Patient:

“…But connive to establish a set of standards for raw milk producers? I don’t think so. That’s why I had to chuckle at some of the comments by Barney Google and lola granola.

I appreciate their sincerity in arguing that this is such a touchy issue it requires secret planning–I just wish I had the conspiratorial power ascribed to me (and others) and, more important, that something significant was being accomplished.

As Mark McAfee correctly points out, nothing formal is anywhere near being accomplished on the standards-setting side. Just a bunch of informal emails with ideas and discussion. A lot of sincere people without much power, trying things out. Continue reading

Russian scientists linking 2,000,000 American deaths to use of GMO crops

The following excerpt is from a European Union Times story from April 17th:

“A most chilling report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by the Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Science for Prime Minister Putin states that a “mysterious die-off” in the United States has claimed over 2,000,000 lives since 2008 and is “more than likely” linked to a “crossover” plant disease linked to genetically modified grains and foods.

According to these reports this mysterious, and as yet unidentified, lung disease responsible for this mass die-off began during the spring of 2008 in the US agricultural State of Iowa where (very ironically) at least 36 people attending a Lung Association event at the Governors mansion were stricken. 35 people sick with Campylobacter in Wisconsin reportedly all drank milk from the same raw dairy

This story first hit the news Thursday and we’ve yet to see any report that quotes a statement from the farmers involved. The Bovine has also tried to contact the farmers, with no success so far. So for now, we can only go on what has been published in the media. Here’s an excerpt from a story from the JournalTimes.com titled “Racine County residents sickened by raw milk“. A sidebar on the story asks victims to contact the reporter, presumably for followup reports. David E. Gumpert, in one of the articles below asks a very pertinent question — why can’t we use such cases to fine-tune raw milk production systems so this kind of thing doesn’t happen instead of as a pretext to restrict raw milk access even further?

State officials are blaming raw milk for sickening more than 30 people in southeastern Wisconsin, including residents from Racine and Kenosha counties.

Officials are warning consumers not to drink raw milk after test results and other evidence confirmed an illness outbreak involving at least 35 people, mainly teenagers and children, who drank unpasteurized milk, the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced this week.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services discovered 35 confirmed cases of campylobacter jejuni infection, including 21 patients under age 18.

The majority of the confirmed cases, 27, were from Walworth and Waukesha counties, the rest were in Racine and Kenosha counties. One person was hospitalized.

“Laws requiring pasteurization of milk have been on the books for more than half a century and there are good public health reasons for that,” Steve Ingham, head of the Food Safety Division in the DATCP, said in a news release. Continue reading

Milk sickens boy — factory food again

This is excerpted from a piece by Doug Schmidt in the Windsor Star titled “Masse seeks probe” from October 21, 2008. Once again, as in the lysteria outbreak, factory food was involved.

“With the local area suffering deaths and illness flowing from three major national food safety scares in recent months, MP Brian Masse is calling on the federal auditor general to investigate the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

“Breakfast, lunch and dinner have now become a risk for Canadians and their families,” said Masse (NDP — Windsor West). “It’s disturbing to think any day you can consume food products that put your family at risk.”

Masse met last week with a Windsor man who has launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against a national dairy company after he and his children fell seriously ill after consuming store-bought milk a month ago that was laced with metal and possibly other foreign substances. Continue reading
