Bill Marler recants earlier statement on raw milk and recent Brucellosis case

From Bill’s “Real Raw Milk Facts” blog:

“My dear friend, David Gumpert (“The Pope of Raw Milk”), suggested that I may have jumped the gun on linking Twin Rivers Farm raw milk to the Brucella illness.  Mixed into his typical lawyer bashing and incorrect suggestions about why I do what I do, I certainly can concede his point that the Brucella illness might well be linked to other farm-related practices.  So, despite the health department’s suggestion to discard the milk due to the risk, I have added “Possibly” to the headline.  I hope that satisfies the “Holy See.”

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued a consumer alert on Friday after learning that a local farm’s raw milk could be contaminated with Brucella. Brucellosis, also called Bang’s disease, Crimean fever, Gibraltar fever, Malta fever, Maltese fever, Mediterranean fever, rock fever, or undulant fever, is a highly contagious zoonosis caused by ingestion of unpasteurized milk or meat from infected animals or close contact with their secretions….” Continue reading

Now a word from our sponsor… NOT!

You will die!!!!!!!!

The dire warnings given below about raw milk remind me of a fun new blog I’ve stumbled upon lately titled “Narco Polo”, whose author, Robert R. Arthur, advocates for the legalization of drugs. The author, who is a former teacher and public defender, has also written a book titled “You will die, the burden of modern taboos”.

Unfortunately this fascinating volume is currently out of print, but soon to be reprinted by those fun loving folks at Feral House — you know, the people who brought you “Sex and Rockets”, “The Carnival of Life and Death”, “Cult Rapture”, and “Apocalypse Culture”. But lest anyone think we might be biased here on the Bovine, or oblivious to other points of view, here’s some intel from a recent official Canadian health advisory on raw milk, excerpted from Bill Marler’s “Real Raw Milk Facts” blog:

“OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 24, 2011) – Health Canada would like to remind Canadians not to drink raw (unpasteurized) milk because it could contain bacteria that can make you seriously ill. Continue reading

Government’s role in protecting “the children” from their raw milk parents

From Karen De Coster on LewRockwell.com

This dumbed-down piece on the website Real Raw Milk Facts is one of the most inept propaganda pieces I have ever seen making the case against raw milk. The author of the piece, Richard Raymond, invokes hyperbolic history and distorted facts to make the case that, under no instance, should any person be able to freely purchase raw milk. Among the many reasons he wants to see federal laws against the sale and purchase of raw milk: the CDC and the FDA do not endorse raw milk. He writes:

Laws are written for a reason, usually to help keep us safe. Parents who find ways to circumvent the laws should be held responsible when their children suffer because of their actions.

But to buy this product and feed it to your children? Might as well lock them in your car on a 100 degree day while you stop by the casino to try and win the jackpot.

Mr. Raymond goes on to say that children don’t have a choice whether or not to ingest raw milk because their parents make that decision for them. Mr. Raymond believes that since parents do not always make the “right choice for their kids,” government needs to step in with laws and make those choices for them. And who gets to decide whose choice is “right?” Of course, government – the CDC and the FDA – is always “right” by default, and anything that goes against the health establishment’s credo is “not right.” Mr. Raymond thinks that the government should make the choice about the food your kids can eat, as well as the immunizations they must receive. There ought to be a law… keeping kids safe from their parents, and raw milk

From Dr. Richard Raymond, former Undersecretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture (2005-2008) on Bill Marler’s “Real Raw Milk Facts” website:

“….In Colorado, it is illegal to sell raw, unpasteurized goats’ or cows’ milk, but the people who fell ill and the farmer got around this by what is called the Goat Share Program. You buy a share of a goat (or cow) for a set price and get a set amount of milk in return. And you pay a “boarding fee” on top of that to cover the farmers’ costs and labor. So it is technically your goat, I guess, and therefore you are not violating the law by “buying milk.”

Laws are written for a reason, usually to help keep us safe. Parents who find ways to circumvent the laws should be held responsible when their children suffer because of their actions. Continue reading

Raw milk consumers win round one on interstate commerce legal challenge

Excerpted from “Real Raw Milk Facts” blog:

Falls Church, Virginia (August 20, 2010) –  In a complex federal district court ruling, Judge Mark W. Bennett refused to grant a motion by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to dismiss a lawsuit filed against the agency by the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) and eight other named plaintiffs.  The lawsuit argues that federal regulations (21 CFR 1240.61 and 21 CFR 131.10) prohibiting raw milk for human consumption in interstate commerce are unconstitutional as applied to FTCLDF’s members and the other plaintiffs named in the suit.
