“The best defense is a good offense. That axiom is proving to be the best strategy for the small farmer in America.
In two instances in neighboring states, the small, organic farmer is taking the initiative while enlisting the help of neighbors as well as local law enforcement to push back after being pushed around.
In Loganville, Wis., the saga of Mennonite farmer Vernon Hershberger has switched from defense to offense after four charges were levied this month. Hershberger has turned the pressure back on the state after being charged with four misdemeanors for selling raw milk and organic foods to his food club. Continue reading
“Small farmers across the country, beware, your local authorities and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are out to put you out of business.
Raids have taken place against small farmers in Maine, Pennsylvania, Nevada, California and Wisconsin against farmers for a variety of reasons, including selling organic and raw foods, as well as the sale and distribution of raw milk.
While it is legal in Illinois to buy raw milk at a farm, protests have sprung up, including the raw milk protest held in Chicago last week without incident. A half-dozen mothers reportedly transported raw milk from Wisconsin to Chicago, where they accepted payment for some of the milk and passed out the rest to demonstrators protesting FDA regulations. “The Raw Milk Freedom Riders, a group that comprises “Food Freedom Advocates” from across the United States, will be staging a raw milk transport over the Wisconsin border and into Chicago Thursday, Dec. 8, culminating in a rally at Independence Park.
The caravan and “Free Milk and Cookies” rally has been organized to protest the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) policies regarding interstate commerce regulation of the sale and distribution of raw milk. Wisconsin law prohibits such sales by independent farms, while Illinois laws allow the sale of raw milk by farmers to consumers. Continue reading
