1 in 6 Americans sickened, 128,000 hospitalized and 3,000 die each year from food-borne illness — CDC

So says CBC.ca news:

“About one in six Americans gets sick from a food-borne illness every year, according to new reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC estimates that 48 million people in the U.S. get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die each year from food-borne diseases.

“These illnesses are associated with billions in health care costs and have a substantial human cost in severe illnesses and, in some cases, long-term health effects,” Dr. Chris Braden, acting director of CDC’s division of food-borne, water-borne, and environmental diseases, said from Atlanta during a teleconference with media Wednesday.
