FDA finds melamine in American baby formula but recommends parents continue using it — WTF?

Thanks no doubt to the far-reaching results of globalization, companies that supply 90% of the American baby formula market are finding melamine in their products. Here’s an excerpt from the Associated Press story (via The Huffington Post):

“Traces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling U.S. infant formula, but federal regulators insist the products are safe. The Food and Drug Administration said last month it was unable to identify any melamine exposure level as safe for infants, but a top official said it would be a “dangerous overreaction” for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it.

“The levels that we are detecting are extremely low,” said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “They should not be changing the diet. If they’ve been feeding a particular product, they should continue to feed that product. That’s in the best interest of the baby.”

Melamine is the chemical found in Chinese infant formula _ in far larger concentrations _ that has been blamed for killing at least three babies and making at least 50,000 others ill.

Previously undisclosed tests, obtained by The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act, show that the FDA has detected melamine in a sample of one popular formula and the presence of cyanuric acid, a chemical relative of melamine, in the formula of a second manufacturer.

Separately, a third major formula maker told AP that in-house tests had detected trace levels of melamine in its infant formula.

The three firms _ Abbott Laboratories, Nestle and Mead Johnson _ manufacture more than 90 percent of all infant formula produced in the United States.

The FDA and other experts said the melamine contamination in U.S.-made formula had occurred during the manufacturing process, rather than intentionally.

The U.S. government quietly began testing domestically produced infant formula in September, soon after problems with melamine-spiked formula surfaced in China….”

Melamine, formaldehyde or a host of other preservatives what’s the difference as there has to be something to keep the food from spoiling until it reaches your plate as it is no longer made in Canada or did you think the chemicals were there to make the food you eat healthier. Did you ever wonder why cream has a forty day life expectancy instead of the fourteen days it had when you were younger ?A long time ago (ten years) we produced and packaged this food in our own county/province/country but now globalization is in full swing and with the help of our elected officials the major companies can produce and pack in a country with safety and wage levels far,far below North America, ship it back here sell it to you and make seventy % more profits. Remember Canadian cheese is made from milk solid imports

my name is clearly identified and I am just one vote

I’ve done my research and found that Nature’s One Baby’s Only Organic Formula is the BEST product out there. It’s readily available in the US, but in Canada, I’ve only been able to find one company selling it and I thank them dearly for it! Their service is impeccable and their pricing is very good too! You can find them online at http://www.ilife.ca. They don’t have melamine, hexane or BPA in any of their formulations.
